Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Garden Warfare it has drastically changed our experience in this conflict between “tender” plants (don't let their “cuddly” appearance fool you) and increasingly aggressive zombies.

After achieving great success with the first installment, PopCap and Electronic Arts have returned with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, a second chapter even more frenetic and overwhelming than its predecessor, which despite its many merits, was not without its flaws and some elements to revise. With this new chapter, the development studio has taken the opportunity to create a bigger, more complete, and more fun Garden Warfare than ever before. We thank Xbox for giving us the chance to try it. Let's explore it together!

The struggle continues

Life in Suburbia It can't be easy: zombies are eating brains everywhere, and plants are coming to life to defend their territory. This time, the fictional town serves as the central hub, with the two factions vying for conquest of the city. On one side, we have Dave the Mad who once again relies on his plants to defend the home garden, another the evil Prof. Zombotron He only wants the last remaining brain: Dave's. On one side, then, the lush garden protected by plants, while on the other, the unsettling mansion from which the horde of the undead arrives. We will choose which side to be on, who to help first. The novelty of this Garden Warfare is indeed the presence of single-player missions, to be completed for Crazy Dave and Professor Zombotron.

What's new?

The first big new feature in Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is the presence of a single-player mode. In the first Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, this component was missed, but it has now been skillfully added. Facing a path of 20 missions, it will be possible to learn about the game's features and the new characters available (a sort of tutorial). A great new addition to the many others, which we will discuss later. To access the single-player campaign, and all other modes, it will be essential to go through the main hub which replaces the classic text menu. Here, among many other things, you can Choose whether to side with and use Plants or Zombies (a choice that can be changed at any time, without losing progress in that faction's main campaign) and thus freely explore a free-roaming area where you can also participate in challenges against hordes of enemies. In addition, you can easily earn in-game coins (also earnable in the various modes the game offers), which can be used to purchase Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 cards, with which to unlock some of the characters available in this sequel. A big “minus” that I was able to appreciate is the absence of microtransactions this time (at least for now). I found it to be a positive thing because, in my personal opinion, they ruined the experience and balance of the game. The main campaign, despite being single player, will also be playable in local or online co-op multiplayer, with up to 4 players.. But the strong point of this chapter, as you can well imagine, is the multiplayer component consisting of many possibilities available to users.

Long-lasting gameplay

As mentioned earlier, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 introduces a host of new features, including new game modes you can enjoy on your own or with friends (you’ll certainly never find yourself wondering, “What do I do now?”). Among the new modes is one where Plants and Zombies must capture outposts, attacking and defending until you achieve ultimate victory (very fun, especially when played with friends). Additionally, you can randomly face all the modes present within Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, adding a touch of unpredictability. At the end of these challenges, you will be offered some minigames able to vary the gameplay once again. The fun never ends. If you really want to find a flaw in PopCap's work, it can be highlighted by the fact that an online connection is indispensable, always and in any case, even for the multiplayer mode. However, the server response has always been positive and has never caused any kind of problem.

In conclusion

Unexpectedly, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 It's improved a lot since the first chapter. The attention to detail in the characters, the level design of the new maps, and all those little things that we are not usually accustomed to noticing but that make this fantastic title even more complete and well-made struck me deeply. What can I say, it's no secret that I had a lot of fun playing alone and with my friends the multitude of game modes present in this fun-filled title. A single-player campaign that has never been present in previous titles and the new additions to the general gameplay give this installment of the series infinite longevity, in addition to a depth worthy of the best shooters, making PopCap's excellent work, their greatest masterpiece, at the expense of needing a constant online connection.
