Last week, we flew to London for a quick first look at Samsung's new display range. The Korean giant continues its assault on the gaming monitor market with an increasingly diverse offering.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

From new OLEDs to home office solutions, not to mention the "absurd" class offerings we've seen over the past two years. What did they have in mind for us?<\/p>\n

The Year of OLED<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let's start with what we didn't expect: there was no curved 200-inch model or any of the other usual craziness we've become accustomed to lately. Sure, Samsung continues to offer the excellent 49-inch Odyssey G9 OLED (which we reviewed here<\/a>) and the equally gargantuan 57-inch Odyssey G9 (which you can read about here<\/a>, not to mention the second generation of Ark!. But this year the focus was less on those things that probably cost too much to be considered realistic and more on more attractive offers for everyone.<\/p>\n

Anyway, this is the TV we want in the newsroom<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In particular, the new G6 and G8 models, which reflect both the design and materials of last year's G9 but with smaller sizes.<\/p>\n

Both gaming models share common features. The Odyssey OLED G8 and OLED G6 have a brightness of 250 nits and full support for FreeSync Premium Pro. The two new OLED models feature Samsung OLED Safeguard+, a new proprietary burn-in protection technology. This technology is the world's first to prevent burn-in through pulsed thermal conduction across the screen. The dynamic cooling system evaporates and further condenses a coolant, distributing heat five times more efficiently than the old graphite plate method, which prevents burn-in by reducing the temperature at the center. The monitor also recognizes static images, such as logos and taskbars, and automatically reduces their brightness to prevent burn-in. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get a first-hand look at this heatpipe system, but we've confirmed it's passive (meaning there's no water pump like a traditional PC liquid cooler; the solution used in these monitors is more similar to what's seen in laptops and smartphones).<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Both models gain an important (and in our opinion, overlooked) feature: anti-glare. Already seen on the brand's 2024 TV models, Samsung's Glare-Free OLED technology is seriously impressive. The anti-glare coating optimized for OLEDs solves the conflict between brightness and glare thanks to a new special coating and a surface coating pattern. Simply put, the amount of reflections we see on the panel is drastically reduced, even in situations where we have a spotlight pointed directly at the screen. Once again, we saw this technology in two different demos: the first during the Samsung's early year showcase<\/a> in the TV space and then during the London event. Specifically, the two monitors were installed next to a huge window that let in plenty of daylight. We were favorably impressed in both demos, but we still need to confirm the effectiveness of the effect independently and not in an environment largely controlled by Samsung.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Odyssey G8 OLED<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let's start with the G8, available in a 32-inch size. With a 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) and a 240Hz refresh rate (with a 0.03ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response time), it's undoubtedly an attractive offering. Essentially a \u201cmini G9\u201d in every way except for the more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio versus 32:9. The Odyssey OLED G8 is also Samsung's first gaming monitor to support AI. The NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, which Samsung is also using in its 2024 8K TV, scales content to near 4K when used with smart TV apps and streaming games, to deliver a higher resolution for gaming and entertainment. These AI effects apparently don't apply to PC output, which is undoubtedly the right choice in terms of introducing lag and potential visual artifacts. We had the opportunity to take a look at Samsung's AI at the TV showcase last February, so it goes without saying that the G8 OLED, like the 2023 models, is increasingly reducing the gap between "TV" and "monitor", given that they are functionally similar, with the advantage for the PC offering of having better video inputs than a "simple" HDMI 2.1.<\/p>\n

Odyssey G6<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 27-inch Odyssey OLED G6 features a QHD resolution and an impressive 360Hz refresh rate. Otherwise, it's very similar to its bigger brother, but it's clearly positioned towards the esports market, given its smaller size (preferred by many) and refresh rate. We had the chance to test the G6 for a few minutes during the London event, and initial impressions are very positive regarding the panel's responsiveness. Unfortunately, there wasn't time for more in-depth testing; that's what reviews are for.<\/p>\n

Interview with Pepe Dijkstra<\/strong><\/p>\n

We couldn't miss the opportunity to discuss the 2024 lineup with Pepe Dijkstra, Head of Monitor & Hotel TV \u2013 Samsung European Display Organization. We've therefore provided a shortened transcript of our interview, in which we addressed some of the issues we found most interesting, particularly regarding the positioning of the brand's offerings on the market.<\/p>\n

Gamepad<\/strong>Today we saw several new products from Samsung. Let's talk about the new OLED screen sizes. Is this a strategy aimed at reaching those with less space or limited budgets?<\/p>\n

Pepper<\/strong>Interesting question. When it comes to 27- and 32-inch OLEDs, we've been looking at the large-format monitor market, but there's a lack of smaller, more affordable options. So, we decided to expand our offering to include these formats, addressing space and price constraints. The 32-inch 4K model, in particular, was highly anticipated by the market.<\/p>\n

Gamepad<\/strong>I understand. Personally, I found last year's 57-inch model too large for home use. It's nice to see you're not excluding an important demographic\u2014those with smaller spaces.<\/p>\n

Pepper<\/strong>: Exactly, it's not a change in strategy, but rather an adaptation to market needs. We're expanding our options for those looking for smaller sizes without sacrificing quality.<\/p>\n

Gamepad<\/strong>Speaking of technology, you mentioned a new cooling technology to reduce the risk of burn-in. Can you explain how it works?<\/p>\n

Pepper<\/strong>Of course. Our technology distributes the temperature using a fluid that evaporates and condenses, keeping the screen at an acceptable temperature. This prevents the risk of burn-in. It's a convection system, without water pumps.<\/p>\n

Gamepad<\/strong>: One more question: When you launched the Arc, it was the most extravagant monitor I'd ever seen. Was it a success for Samsung?<\/p>\n

Pepper<\/strong>We didn't expect large volumes, but it was a success in terms of innovation leadership. We've already launched the second generation, so it went well.<\/p>\n

Gamepad<\/strong>Interesting. And how do you evaluate the performance of the various products in your portfolio?<\/p>\n

Pepper<\/strong>We evaluate factory efficiency and market demand. For example, we're also considering the 57-inch model as a control room TV, given the specific demand in those sectors.<\/p>\n
