At this year's Gamescom 2022, we had the chance to try a demo of Homeworld 3, the new deep-space RTS from Gearbox Software.<\/p>\n

\"\"The saga started in 1999 continues to garner interest from fans of the RTS genre. Development on this third installment began in 2017, but it was in 2019 that Blackbird Interactive (responsible for development) launched a crowdfunding campaign. Thanks to this, they managed to raise substantial funds and receive valuable feedback from their large fanbase. This allowed the developers to make informed decisions about the best direction to take and which gameplay elements to focus on most.<\/p>\n

In Homeworld 3, we will be fighting a mysterious plague known as \u201cThe Anomaly\u201d which is spreading throughout the galaxy, obscuring entire star systems and endangering the survival of all sentient beings.<\/p>\n

The game promises a rather extensive single-player campaign and a new co-op mode that blends RTS elements with Roguelike elements. During our hands-on with the demo, we were able to appreciate very responsive gameplay and spectacular graphics for the genre, all enhanced by a well-crafted and engaging musical score. The fusion of all these elements makes for an extremely immersive player experience; in short, this means that once you start playing, it will probably be quite difficult to stop! A major new feature of this title is the so-called cover system, which will allow us to strategically utilize the available three-dimensional environment. For example, if we find ourselves facing opponents who are more numerous and better equipped than us, we can take cover within the wreckage of other ships, or use other environmental elements (for cover, precisely) to surprise the enemy fleet, perhaps with a well-coordinated attack from behind.<\/p>\n

In Homeworld 3, we will find much larger maps compared to its predecessors, but they will be anything but empty: various structures and cover elements will enrich the aesthetic of the setting, allowing us to have a much more immersive and detailed experience, but also to count on usable elements to gain concrete advantages in the game. In short, this is not merely an aesthetic flourish; in some situations, using cover tactics will be indispensable for taking down cruisers that would normally be able to pulverize a large part of our ships without even a hint of tactics. The offensive system also aims for immersion and the wow factor: developers have made great efforts to make the combat experience more spectacular and immersive. The game has certainly impressed us positively, and in our opinion, it will certainly be a title worth trying, especially for all RTS enthusiasts. Homeworld 3 is coming to PC in mid-2023.<\/p>\n
