Luigi's Mansion is a series I'm a bit late to. More specifically, Luigi's Mansion 2 for Nintendo 3DS. Yes, it's been a while since we last ghost-busted with Luigi (it was 2013), and it's almost time to unplug the vacuum cleaner for a new adventure! We took a closer look at it at the Nintendo booth during E3.<\/p>\n

\nAs is often the case with these games, our demo was strictly limited in time. After all, it was more of a first look at the game to confirm the feel and core gameplay than to provide a true 360-degree view. We began our demo with a short tutorial, intended to introduce newcomers to Luigi's Mansion gameplay. As always, the protagonist is equipped with the Poltergust, a sort of vacuum cleaner for ghosts and ectoplasm. Using the Poltergust, we can suck up ghosts and defeat them by slamming them into the ground (or into other ghosts!), as well as interact with the world.<\/p>\n

For example, you can suck up apples and mice, pull ropes and other objects, and even reverse the direction to create a current of air to, say, move the blades of a windmill. Fighting with the Poltergust is always a two-step affair: first, we must make the enemy ghosts tangible by flashing them with a particularly bright light. Then, we can suck them up and drag them to the opposite side from where they are trying to escape, then, as mentioned, physically damage them. But the Poltergust can also reveal hidden objects and secrets with a secondary mode that works like an ultraviolet light. Usually, this involves discovering secondary items and collectibles, but we're not sure if that's all it is\u2014we'll have to see the full game! Luigi has another trick up his sleeve: a real arrow, tipped with a suction cup. This new weapon can be useful for interacting with objects (because the arrow can be sucked up to open a wooden barrel or to steal the shield from an otherwise invulnerable ghost). It also serves as a true attack system, with the player having the choice of how to exploit the possibilities offered by the game.<\/p>\n

\nThe gameplay of Luigi's Mansion is still very similar to how you remember it. Poor Luigi, perpetually scared to death, must navigate a haunted house, solving puzzles and small riddles. The novelty is that Luigi isn't completely alone this time; he can double as Gooigi. Gooigi is a gummy bear-like, ectoplasmic version of Luigi. This greenish alter ego will be essential for solving certain puzzles that require two people. The first of these puzzles is a plate from which sharp spikes emerge, lethal to Luigi but completely harmless to Gooigi. The mechanics are very similar to other games with this type of asynchronous gameplay: we move Gooigi, block him so that he keeps the trap deactivated, pick up Luigi, and cross over to reunite the two on the other side. Nothing new, but it's certainly a fun addition to the series, and we're pretty sure it'll be fully exploited throughout the adventure. The E3 demo had us exploring every new gameplay idea: riding down an elevator powered by the wind produced by the Poltergust, navigating traps with Gooigi, and fighting with a mix of suction and suction-cup arrows. All of this culminated in a small boss fight, which we defeated with a bit of patience, waiting for the right moment to flash him with light, then sucking him up and slamming him left and right.<\/p>\n

\nLuigi's Mansion 3 is almost certainly a must-have for fans of the series. Not to sell it to you early, but because what we saw was pure Luigi's Mansion, but on Nintendo Switch. Sure, it's a series that's perhaps a bit more niche, but it's one that has carved out a following over the years. The title is expected this year, and we can't wait to play it all for you.<\/p>\n
