Before we begin, a warning: I am one of the few who enjoyed DmC \u2013 Devil May Cry back in 2013. I say this not because I didn\u2019t enjoy my very short (too short!) demo of Devil May Cry 5 at the Xbox booth at Gamescom, but because the previous installment was quite controversial among longtime fans of the Capcom series.<\/p>\n

This new installment, however, wasn't developed in the West but by Hideaki Itsuno and part of the same historic team that created the series. Ninja Theory, which has now become a Microsoft first-party studio, has thus left behind.<\/p>\n

The demo we played, which, as mentioned, was very limited in time, features Nero fighting his way through groups of demons in an urban environment. In the distance, we glimpse a demonic tree whose roots appear to be the source of evil. Visually, we're not looking at anything miraculous, but the style is appreciable, particularly in terms of the lighting effects and the destructibility of certain elements of the game world.<\/p>\n

\nThe main new feature immediately catches the eye: the Devil Breaker. It's a mechanical arm with various functions that can even be upgraded during the adventure by visiting Nico's shop and spending credits earned in-game. The Devil Breaker is a new offensive weapon that complements the more traditional firearms and swords, which have always been a key part of the Devil May Cry series' identity. Nero's mechanical arm is a key component of DMC 5's combat system: several components can be used in combat. For example, we can use Gerbera, a move that sends the character flying. We also tried Ouverture, an attachment that allows Nero to perform electrical attacks. Unfortunately, we didn't really have the chance to test out the combat system, which seemed much deeper and more versatile than we expected. The combination of melee, firearm, and bionic arm attacks will likely allow for some very complex and interesting combos.<\/p>\n

\nDevil May Cry 5 looks to mark a return to its roots, with the original team committed to bringing the series to our screens in March 2019. Will it be able to take the good things from 2013's DmC and marry them with the great things from the previous installments? So far, it seems to us that Capcom is on the right track.<\/p>\n
