<\/p>\nOn the first day of E3, we had the great honor of being among the first group of journalists to try Metal Gear Survive, a true spin-off of Snake's adventures.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
After being sucked into a portal when Mother Base explodes, a group of soldiers find themselves trapped in a strange world infested with headless humanoid creatures. Survive is quite a departure from Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. From a stealth-focused game, it's now more focused on action and combat, designed for four-player online co-op.<\/p>\n

\nHaving arrived a few minutes late for the event, we missed much of the briefing by the Konami developers, who, remember, are no longer under the direction of Hideo Kojima. Before diving into the action, however, we were able to choose a character from the game's four different options. The final version will allow players to customize their avatar's appearance, skills, and weapons, but in the E3 demo, for brevity and convenience, we were limited to four predefined loadouts. We opted for a girl armed with a bow, stun baton, and medium-range assault rifle. Once we'd chosen our character, we were catapulted into a neutral world, a sort of completely white training area where we could test out weapons and skills. Since the goal of the game is to defend a machine from hordes of undead that will attack us in waves, the testing area was useful for testing not only the weapons but also, and more importantly, the special items. Our character had several interesting options: creating fences, placing electrified traps on the ground, building elevated turrets, and the ability to place mortar emplacements as well as hand grenades.<\/p>\n

A decent number of items to use strategically in the game. We played around for a few minutes, experimenting with item and weapon combinations, such as placing a trap-protected lookout tower from which to shoot from a high vantage point. Once that was done, it was time to play for real. Our team of four players found themselves in a desert area. As we quickly advanced toward the point to defend, we encountered a few zombies here and there, which we dispatched silently with bows and arrows or with close-range shots. Once we reached the defended area, it was a small cluster of buildings with a generator of sorts at its center. The area was defensible but certainly not a fortress: the central clearing was protected by buildings and walls, but several areas were open to the outside, and some sides were easily climbable from the outside. The team immediately began closing the most obvious openings, which also happened to coincide with spawn points visible on the game's mini-map. We then deployed various offensive weapons and became familiar with the in-game crafting system. Ammo isn't infinite, and you have to craft it during the match, after gathering metal, lead, gunpowder, and other ingredients. However, we had little time to think, because after a couple of minutes of preparation, we were attacked by the first wave.<\/p>\n

The enemies didn't display much intelligence, essentially advancing zombie-like in a straight line toward the center of the defense zone. Their strength isn't cunning, but rather sheer numbers. We still repelled the first wave of enemies quite easily. Preparing for the second wave was similar to the first, with the added requirement to heal your character. A dedicated menu lets you see which body parts are injured and need healing. We also struggled with the ammo crafting system: it was impossible to quickly determine which type of bullets your rifle fired, so we had to craft different types of ammo, wasting resources, until we found the right ones.<\/p>\n

\nThe second wave introduced much more powerful, explosive-type enemies. If allowed to get too close, these zombies can be a real problem. However, it's also possible to exploit this enemy type tactically, as their explosions cause significant damage in the surrounding area. After surviving the second wave, we fell victim to the zombies at the end of the third, having foolishly forgotten one side of the barricade!<\/p>\n

Visually, Metal Gear Survive was a bit of a disappointment. Not content with recycling much of the assets from Ground Zeroes, Survive seemed decidedly underwhelming in the PlayStation 4 version we played. The game, however, has a rather steep initial learning curve, which, briefing or not, slowed our initial progress. Survive has the potential to be a serious co-op game, but there's still a long way to go to refine the gameplay and make it more fun.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
