The day has come. Finally, thanks to several special features published by Eurogamer and DigitalFoundry, we know all the specs of Project Scorpio.<\/p>\n

The hardware announcement was a necessary step for Microsoft. Mindful of the absolute disaster of the Xbox One reveal, this time Redmond saw fit to get the boring part out of the way (and boring it was, considering we had to read long articles that killed any enthusiasm for the presentation) with special features published by an independent publication. By doing so, we ensured an E3 filled only with games and important information. Before telling you what we know, let's see what We don't know: name, price, release date and game lineup<\/strong>. In short, we only know what's inside the console but not what it will look like or what it will do.<\/p>\n

Technical specifications<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Microsoft has given the exclusive to Eurogamer, so we will steal from them without any qualms to tell you about the console (you can still read the whole article original here<\/a>)<\/p>\n

In short, Scorpio is significantly more powerful than the Xbox One and even the PS4 Pro. To finalize these specifications, Microsoft conducted long and complex analyses of the titles available for Xbox One, evaluating the strengths and, especially, weaknesses of the old hardware. The result is a console built for 4K, capable of running the titles already in the hands of gamers today at their best. With a more powerful CPU (the 31%) than the Xbox One and a GPU 4.6 times more powerful, Scorpio also boasts 12 GB of GDDR5, 4 of which are reserved (for now) for the system and 8 for games.<\/p>\n

\nThis is a truly significant improvement over the Xbox One's incredibly slow DDR3 (despite working in tandem with ESRAM, which is no longer present in the new design). Due to be released this year, Scorpio isn't based on Ryzen and Vega, AMD's new CPU and GPU lines. While Scorpio's CPU isn't as powerful as the Xbox One's, the GPU is very powerful. Furthermore, Microsoft has heavily customized the console's internal silicon design, adopting several measures to increase overall performance. The cooling system's design is interesting, echoing the solutions NVidia has adopted with its latest high-performance graphics cards. Instead of the traditional heatsink and fan, a vapor chamber system has been adopted. In simple terms: distilled water is ionized to dissipate heat more quickly between the copper base and the rest of the heatsink (so much for the "sloppiness" of the word). An expensive system, sure, but much more efficient and quieter.<\/p>\n

The Ultimate Scorpio Motherboard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\nThe audio component hasn't been forgotten, gaining support for Dolby Atmos and HRTF. A hardware HEVC encoder will allow players to capture 4K\/60FPS video, likely for streaming with Beam, Microsoft's competing service to Twitch. Improvements continue with a faster 1TB HDD and an internal power supply. For this very reason, the console's I\/O is essentially identical to that of the Xbox One S. The HDMI port is obviously 2.0, to enable 4K and HDR.<\/p>\n

Microsoft is betting heavily on 4K, but gamers on Full HD TVs will also see benefits, much like the PS4 Pro already does. Games that use dynamic resolution, such as The Witcher 3, will see immediate performance improvements. Unlike the PS4 Pro, developers won't need to create patches to allow the game to take advantage of the more powerful hardware available. This doesn't mean, however, that a game developed for 1080p at 30 FPS will run at 4K at 60 FPS. Games will perform as best as they can under the conditions in which they were created, and development teams will still be able to introduce ad-hoc modes to push the games beyond their original capabilities.<\/p>\n

There was little talk about games in today's reveal. Understandably, Microsoft wants to save everything for E3. Digital Foundry did, however, see a version of Forza Motorsport 6 running on Scorpio hardware at native 4K 60 FPS. The game was ported to the new console in just a couple of days and runs at the ultra quality available on PC. Turn 10 simply wanted to demonstrate that the performance increases are there and that the power of the new console can be exploited with little effort. It remains to be seen how the various first-party and, especially, third-party studios will react.<\/p>\n
