During the Los Angeles show, we were able to try out some lesser-known titles, like this one. We're sharing a few words about Narcosis, a title developed by Honor Code, a French studio. The game is a horror survival game, developed entirely for VR (and therefore compatible with Oculus and Vive) and set in the deep sea. We know little about Background's story, but we know enough to intrigue us into playing this demo.<\/p>\n

First things first: we're familiar with a lot of Oculus titles, and we know what horror games look like with a VR headset, so we started out with a certain amount of caution. Perhaps this was precisely what made the game more unnerving and scary than it should have been. As one of the developers explained to us, they preferred to focus on the story and the setting rather than on the "scary" moments that make the player jump out of their seats. The setting itself creates a certain sense of panic: we're underwater, the air display keeps falling, environments with poor visibility, all mixed with a touch of the paranormal, and voil\u00e0, a mix that can lead the player to feel panicked and have little understanding of what to do.<\/p>\n

In the game, we don't have many options, other than moving in all four directions and, with the help of the Oculus, being able to look around. We have "Flares" to illuminate dark areas, and a basic attack can defend us from attacks by sea creatures. The inability to jump is a bit intimidating, but despite this issue, the game is playable. You don't have to go crazy with acrobatics involving improbable jumps and impossible movements, simply move through the level following the path. Looking around and seeing the helmet of the suit creates a certain sense of confinement, and especially when the air slowly runs out, our vision gradually diminishes, as if we're closing our eyes. This effect helps increase the tension when searching for a way out or trying to escape from imminent danger.<\/p>\n

The paranormal context, in my opinion, is the key to the game; it has that effect: What's happening? Was that there before? Did the level move? Haven't I been here before? Did I go back? What the hell is that?!? All mixed with virtual reality, you get a perfect mix of fear that can make the player feel scared. In conclusion, Necrosis is a title that deserves some consideration and could interest a lot of horror-loving players, considering that it will only be playable by those with VR headsets.<\/p>\n
