<\/p>\nOne genre that's been missing from our screens for a while is winter sports. I mean in a serious, non-cartoonish way. We were surprised to discover that Ubisoft was secretly working on Steep, a winter sports title. We had the chance to try it out for a few minutes during E3.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Steep is set in the mountains between Switzerland, France, and Italy. Against the backdrop of the Alps, we can try our hand at four different sports: snowboarding, skiing, paragliding, and wingsuit flying. The concept is simple: we have the mountains entirely at our disposal to have fun however we want. Race against the CPU or friends, perform trick-to-the-edge challenges, or simply enjoy the joy of discovering new, unexplored areas. The freedom is complete, and we can switch modes at any time while using the area map to move from one drop point to another. Switching from snowboarding to skiing, for example, simply requires pressing a shoulder button on the gamepad, and we'll be ready to go in no time.<\/p>\n

\nOur test session was essentially limitless. We were told to do whatever we wanted, wherever we wanted. So I decided to start in a wingsuit, jumping off a dizzying cliff. A little further ahead, I saw a challenge I could activate. By passing through a circle drawn in midair, I activated a speed challenge. It's a shame that zigzagging through rocks at high speed isn't exactly easy, especially in the first few minutes of this title. Naturally, I crashed into a boulder. Death isn't permanent, however, and you can easily restart the race. I finally managed to finish my race! But once it's over, we're certainly not sent back to a menu; as long as there's room, we can continue. I then decided to tackle the next section on skis, since the slope was gentler in the finish area than my previous race.<\/p>\n

The transition was immediate, and I found myself in a grove, slaloming, avoiding trees. With no challenges underway, I simply enjoyed the scenery for a while. I also took the opportunity to activate GoPro mode, a sort of first-person camera, but it's truly unplayable. It's best to stick with third-person view. Eager for a new challenge, I opened the mountain map to teleport to the start of a snowboard trick challenge. To score points, you have to follow a marked path on the snow and perform as many jumps, tricks, and grabs as possible. Using the jump button to prepare for the trick and then the analog sticks, I attempted to rack up as many points as possible. The controls aren't immediately easy to master, and it takes a few tries before you really master them. Having played snowboarding games in the past, like the legendary Amped series on Xbox, I was immediately thrilled to enjoy a simulation of this sport. But I didn't have much time to enjoy the board because time was running out and I still had to try paragliding. I was honestly a bit disappointed with this sport because there's not much to do: we just fly peacefully over the mountains, looking around. A bit awkward to use and slow to respond, paragliding is perhaps the least exciting part of Steep.<\/p>\n

\nSteep, expected this winter, is a title we certainly weren't expecting. Graphically pleasing, despite some minor pop-in, we enjoyed it. The vast playing field offers plenty of opportunities for players to challenge friends or compete for points. Of course, there will also be a photo mode to capture and share our best performances. The longevity of a title like this remains a bit of a concern, but for now, we've had fun.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
