A dull title aside, in this article we want to step away from Joypad's main themes and delve into the broader world of gamers' potential interests. Video games and films go hand in hand with other media, such as literature and comics. Comics, in particular, share a very close and intimate connection with video games, as there are countless video game adaptations of comics! After all, we at Joypad also publish a comic every week., GaMERCaT<\/a>! Precisely for this reason today we have decided to offer you a rather special interview. Let's exchange a few words with Luigi \u201cBigio\u201d Cecch<\/strong>i, author of the popular webcomic Drizzit<\/strong>, beyond The Author<\/strong> and creator of the Drizzit card game and an RPG!<\/p>\n

\"drizzit_logo\"<\/p>\n

Gray<\/strong> he describes himself on his blog<\/a> Like this: Luigi Cecchi, better known in many circles as Bigio, is a notorious criminal who passes himself off as a designer, photographer, comic book artist, writer, and sometimes even a D&D Master. To cover up his true activities (smuggling used post-it notes), he uses the fronts of a comic book store, a game center (the Black Dragon Guild), and a teddy bear who knows much more than he does. <\/em>\"431580_450594851642206_928857206_n\"<\/em>But the truth is, Bigio is actually a calzone stuffed with mozzarella and love, wanting nothing more than to explode and shower you with its joy. This is on the days when Prozac is taking effect. <\/em>In short, it's immediately clear that we're dealing with a unique character, a bit nerdy (but that's how we like them on Joypad) and with a great imagination. Which is the most important thing when you're in a creative profession, right?<\/p>\n

Drizzit is a truly hilarious webcomic, one of those that, like cherries, once you start reading, you can't stop. I've ruined (or improved!) the afternoons of several of my acquaintances by sending them links to read all the adventures of the little dark elf on Facebook<\/a>. But who is drizzit? The official page<\/a> It explains it perfectly and I don't see why I should invent something of my own (long live laziness!):<\/p>\n

Drizzit <\/strong>It began as a parody strip of the famous character Drizzt Do'Urden<\/strong>, protagonist of several fantasy novels written by RA Salvatore and published in Italy by Armenia; however, aside from the protagonist's ironic resemblance (in name and appearance) to the aforementioned dark elf, there are very few other elements that connect Drizzit's story with that of the novels. Drizzit is a dark elf<\/strong> fleeing from the underground, disgusted by the dark elf society and their evilness. Once on the surface, he meets a rather colorful group of adventurers consisting of the dwarf Doctor<\/strong>, from the warrior Wally <\/strong>and from the thief Katy Brie<\/strong>. The first series of adventures focuses on a clash with a tribe of fierce orcs. As the story progresses, new opportunities for wealth and fame will attract the adventurers' attention, but they almost always end in tragedy.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Bigio_Drizzit_GROUP\"<\/p>\n

The Author<\/strong> instead it is a much more particular comic (you can also find it on Facebook<\/a>), since the protagonist is precisely an alter ego of Bigio<\/strong> who finds herself struggling with everyday life. A fairly normal life, if it weren't for the company of several muses who will cause some chaos in her life. But nothing like Oh My Goddess, don't worry!<\/p>\n

After an introduction that I hope is exhaustive enough, we offer you our interview with Bigio, which we hope will pique your curiosity!<\/p>\n

Joypad: Let's start with the classic introductory question: who are you?
\nBigio: A guy with a lot of ideas in his head and little time to realize them all. But I'll try.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: You created Drizzit and The Author: can you tell us about them?
\nB: Well, Drizzit is a humorous fantasy comic strip; The Author is an episodic comic inspired by me, but not autobiographical. The first, being a strip, is published daily (Monday to Friday), the second comes out only on Sundays, although it currently has a double issue. These are my two main comics, then there are a lot of other projects I'm working on, for example, the script for "M," another fantasy comic that's drawn by Manu and colored by Albo. I also write books and work on role-playing games and games in general (mostly those inspired by or based on my works).<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: How did the idea for the webcomic format come about, and what do you think about its spread?
\nB: I believe that "webcomic" isn't a format; it simply means publishing online. Take Drizzit, for example: the format is that of a classic comic strip, except that instead of being published in a paper newspaper, I publish it daily online, both on Facebook and elsewhere. Obviously, publishing online requires some formatting adjustments: comic strips work, while other formats may not. However, deciding to publish online (especially on social media) is an excellent way to gain visibility in a world\u2014publishing\u2014that has always been very closed, offering little space to emerging authors. Now, a newcomer can gain that space in a new way: by making their work known to the public and gaining traction through acclaim. I recommend all aspiring comic book artists to try this route.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Drizzit_701bis_2012\"<\/p>\n

J: Drizzit started online but soon moved to print. How did that come about? When did the story actually begin?
\nB: It started as a joke, and continued because I'm stubborn and I really love what I do. Eventually, a publishing house that's particularly interested in new web artists realized my comic was worth something. Shockdom contacted me and offered to publish the paperback version with them.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: The Author seems quite autobiographical, do you really see yourself that way and do you have such a conflicted relationship with your muses?
\nB: Yes, but my real-life relationship is transposed comic-book-style in The Author. What I mean is that The Author truly captures what I experience with the muses, only it tells it differently. To give a trivial example: I love Talia, because humorous comics are what I do best and are the cornerstone of my success as an author. In the comic, I'm in love with Talia just as I am in real life, but in the comic, it's told differently. I'm not sure how many readers have the tools necessary to fully understand The Author; it's a much more complex work than Drizzit, but I always try to make it entertaining on all levels, so even those who don't delve too deeply can follow it and still have fun!<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: In The Author, you often talk about short stories. Have they ever been published? Have you ever considered doing so?
\nB: In September, the collection \u201cIl Karma del Pinolo\u201d will be published by Del Vecchio Editore, which includes about twenty of my best stories.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: In all your comics and discussions you fight to preserve the correctness of the Italian language, often in a comical way (Wally), is it really that important or can the "immediate" means of communication justify bad grammar?
\nB: Yes, of course they can. It's clear that if you send a tweet you can't use words like "slavishly," and that abbreviations like ASAP or "write me in PM" or "like me" are legitimate. Just as it's normal in an MMORPG chat to use terms like "killare" or "ressare." The terrifying thing is that, in the absence of proper education and instruction, people forget Italian (or don't learn it at all), and we end up with sixteen-year-olds who don't know how to conjugate the verb "to be" because, in fact, they've never used it correctly. How many people put the accent on "s\u00ec" in a statement? How many times on my page do I see "striscie" written with an i? How many times have I heard "this is a Forgotten Realms quote" when it's actually a Forgotten Realms quote? ...if no one teaches people Italian, then it's obvious they'll learn it from WhatsApp.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: Moving on, we know there's a Drizzit card game (we have it, we just have to try it!) and an RPG. Why did you want to create them?
\nB: They're two different stories. The Card Game was born from a proposal by Lucio (the editor of Shockdom) that was then picked up by Mario (the editor of Post Scriptum). I was simply intrigued by the idea of having a game based on my comic, and the card game, with lots of illustrations and simple mechanics, seemed like the right option. The Role-Playing Game, on the other hand, was born from the desire of the guys at Mini Games Studio; I initially didn't want to make it because I thought it was superfluous (D&D already exists!). But I was convinced that a simpler system, one that focused on reproducing the atmosphere of my comic, could work. Being a fan of RPGs, once I decided it was worth doing, I fully embraced the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: As a big fan of board games (like us), do you have any favorites?
\nB: Puerto Rico, Agricola, 7wonders, Kingsburg and many others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J: Do you plan on working on other projects in the future or will you continue developing the current ones for a long time to come?
\nB: Drizzit will end with the 10th series. I don't know about The Author, maybe it'll continue until I get tired of it. I have so many other projects in the works, but I don't like thinking about them; I prefer to focus on the ones I'm working on so as not to distract attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n
